GVC is an acronym used for Guaranteed Viable Curriculum. GVCs are the BIG IDEAS that we want students to WALK AWAY with after spending a year in 7th grade Language Arts. Each of the core's standards can be categorized under these four BIG IDEAS to ensure that students receive instruction on all the English Language Arts curriculum.

​GVC #1
Students will be able to read grade-level literature and informational text.
  • I can annotate a text.
  • I can cite several pieces of textual evidence in response to a reading passage.
  • I can analyze the structure an author uses to organize a text.
  • I can determine 2 themes/central ideas of a text.
  • I can determine an author's point of view or purpose for writing a text.
GVC #2
Students will be able to write for any purpose and audience.
  • I can determine the audience I am writing for.
  • I can manipulate the prompt to become a thesis statement/claim/controlling idea.
  • I can gather information to support my thesis statement/claim/controlling idea.
  • I can organize my information into a logical structure.
  • I can cite my sources appropriately.
GVC #3
Students will collaborate with peers to present information in a digital format.
  • I can engage in collaborative discussions.
  • I can use multimedia components and visual displays in presentations.
  • I can present information orally with appropriate eye-contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.
​GVC #4
Students will use appropriate language in their writing and speaking.
  • I can use grade appropriate vocabulary.
  • I can determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in text.
  • I can identify and use a variety of sentence structures.
  • I can use a comma to separate coordinate adjectives.
